The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route”, is one of the most popular and scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is favored by climbers seeking a more challenging experience with diverse landscapes. Unlike the Marangu Route, accommodation on Machame is in tents rather than huts, offering a more adventurous experience. The route is known for its beautiful views of Mount Meru, Shira Plateau, and the dramatic Barranco Wall.

While the trek is physically demanding, it allows for better acclimatization due to its “climb high, sleep low” approach. This strategy increases summit success rates. The route takes climbers through lush rainforests, expansive moorlands, and the arid alpine desert, culminating in the snowy summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m). It is ideal for those with trekking experience or those looking for a challenge.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be met by the Omotangati Africa team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. After check-in, you'll attend a pre-trek briefing conducted by our experienced guides. The guide will provide an overview of the trek, go over the safety protocols, and ensure you have all the required gear. This is your chance to ask questions and prepare for the adventure ahead.

After an early breakfast, you’ll be driven to Machame Gate, where you’ll complete the registration formalities. Here, you'll meet the porters, guides, and cooks who will accompany you throughout the trek.

The journey begins with a trek through lush rainforest, where you’ll be surrounded by towering trees, ferns, and colorful birds. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and Colobus monkeys playing in the treetops. This stretch is scenic and relatively gentle, but the ground can be muddy and slippery. After a trek of 5-7 hours, you’ll reach Machame Camp (2,835m), where tents will be set up for you.

After breakfast, the trek resumes with a climb through the heath and moorland zone. The lush forest gives way to low shrubs and giant heather. The trail is steeper than the previous day but offers stunning views of Mount Meru rising above the clouds.

As you ascend, the trail becomes rockier, and you’ll traverse volcanic formations until you reach the Shira Plateau, an expansive area formed by volcanic activity. After 4-6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Shira Camp (3,750m), where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the plains and surrounding mountains.

Today’s trek follows the principle of "climb high, sleep low", which is crucial for acclimatization. After breakfast, you’ll trek toward Lava Tower (4,600m), a towering volcanic rock formation. The climb becomes more challenging as you enter the alpine desert, where the air becomes thinner, and the landscape becomes more barren.

After reaching Lava Tower, you’ll descend toward Barranco Camp (3,900m), passing through stunning valleys and dramatic landscapes. This descent allows for acclimatization, improving your chances of summit success. Barranco Camp is set beneath the towering Barranco Wall, which you’ll conquer the following day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trekking Duration: 6-8 hours
Accommodation: Camping at Barranco Camp

The day begins with a thrilling climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep rocky incline that requires some scrambling. While it looks intimidating, it’s more of a climb than a technical challenge. Upon reaching the top of the wall, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Kibo Peak.

The trail then becomes easier, with gradual ascents and descents as you make your way to Karanga Camp (4,035m). This is a shorter trekking day to allow for additional acclimatization.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trekking Duration: 4-5 hours
Accommodation: Camping at Karanga Camp

The trek from Karanga to Barafu Camp (4,650m) is shorter but steeper, as you approach the highest overnight base camp on the route. The landscape becomes more desolate as you move through the alpine desert, with volcanic rocks and gravel dominating the scenery.

Once at Barafu Camp, you’ll have a hearty meal and prepare for the final ascent. Your guides will brief you on what to expect during the summit attempt. You’ll have an early dinner and get some rest, as the summit attempt begins just after midnight.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trekking Duration: 4-5 hours
Accommodation: Camping at Barafu Camp

Summit night begins around midnight. Wearing headlamps and warm gear, you’ll begin the ascent toward Stella Point (5,756m), navigating the steep switchback trails under a star-lit sky. The climb is the most challenging part of the trek, as fatigue and the high altitude take a toll.

After 6-7 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Stella Point, where you’ll be greeted with views of the sunrise breaking over the horizon. From here, it’s a final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa! Take time to capture photos and bask in the incredible achievement.

After the summit, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing to Mweka Camp (3,080m). The descent is much easier, and you’ll be relieved to be at lower altitudes.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trekking Duration: 12-14 hours (summit to Mweka Camp)
Accommodation: Camping at Mweka Camp

After breakfast, it’s a 3-4 hour trek down to Mweka Gate (1,640m) through lush montane forests. Upon reaching the gate, you’ll sign out and receive your climbing certificate — green for those who reached Stella Point and gold for those who reached Uhuru Peak.

A vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved hot shower and celebration dinner. Relax and reflect on your incredible achievement.
